Council’s Role in Public Engagement

This virtual course will be spread over 4 sessions via Zoom and is at the special rate of $200. Mark these dates in your calendar:

Public engagement in municipal governance provides a means for incorporating citizen values, interests, needs and desires into decisions that affect their lives and supports improved municipal decision-making by bringing all perspectives to the table. Focusing on the importance of meaningful public engagement, course participants will consider the role public engagement plays in building strong, vibrant communities. Topics will consider the value and challenges associated with engagement, the role of council, systemic exploration of public engagement related to decision-making. Course participants will also be given information about the supporting elements needed for effective public engagement planning, implementation and evaluation.

Learning outcomes by the end of this course include:

  • Understand both the value and challenges of public engagement initiatives;
  • Recognize the core components of an effective system of public engagement;
  • Evaluate the relationship between public engagement and effective decision-making;
  • Discover opportunities to support and enhance public engagement; and
  • identify solutions to real-world public engagement challenges

Module  1 : Introduction to Public Engagement

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the value and challenges of public engagement
  • Learn what is and isn’t public engagement

Module 2: Public Engagement System Overview

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand systems thinking and public engagement

Module 3: The Outer Ring

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the policy and framework of public engagement

Module 4: The Middle Ring & Bullseye

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Learn what the role of the elected official is in public engagement

Module 5: The Outer Ring

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the supporting pieces are for effective public engagement

  • Two weeks prior to course date or less:  $75 administration fee
  • One week prior to course date:  50% administration fee
